What is stormwater runoff? Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation from rain and snowmelt flows over the ground. Impervious surfaces like roofs, driveways, sidewalks, and streets prevent stormwater from naturally soaking into the ground. Why is stormwater runoff a problem? Stormwater can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants and flow into a storm sewer system, or directly to a lake, stream, river, wetland, or coastal water. Anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into our area lakes and streams. This can create polluted, unsightly waterbodies and affect water quality.

Every time I'm back in my hometown, I run up and down a certain hill. And it seems like each time I do it, there is more and more trash all over it. I used to run by it and think "Why isn't anybody doing anything about this?" But then I thought "Why don't I just do it?" So that's what I did! I care too much about my hometown to see it disrespected like that. I also made this video about it that I'm a little too pumped about lol. Also, I hope you catch the irony at the very end!

 Recycling did you Know!

Did you know, as a mandated community, the Borough of Monaca is required by Act 101 to recycle? But the Borough can’t do it alone! We need your help to increase the amount of recyclable material collected at the curb. Statewide the recycling rate is over 35%, so let’s do our part to catch up!
The Monaca Neighborhood Services Officer will be checking on the following issues, (1.) People are using there BLUE recycling cans. They are free at the borough office during regular business hours. (2.) Trash isn't being put out before 6pm Sunday for Monday pickup and (3.) All garbage in placed  in containers with lids.  This prevents animals from tearing up the trash. It also keeps garbage from blowing all over the neighborhoods and into the storm drains.

Your cooperation is deeply appreciated. Take pride in your home and community.
